anyone done any surround sound at their event? I did one thru FCP using a Matrox MXO2 but it froze up on me, what other options for playback of produced content video and surround audio???

You would need to get a decoder and have the system properly deployed to actually have surround sound in the way we typically think of it. A pseudo-surround sound can be had using some digital audio consoles, where you can assign to a number of outputs which then go to sets of speakers placed appropriately.
