Confusion galore.

I burned a ProRes video to SD DVD PAL using DVD Studio Pro (letting dvd studio pro do the compression). The dvd plays back fine on my Mac and on the Xbox, but clients are reporting that they are seeing interlaced footage on their lcd and plasma televisions.

This confuses me a lot cause I always thought that every SD DVD is interlaced and the dvd player/tv will take care of the de-interlacing.

Can someone clear this up? How would I make sure the DVD plays fine on all plasmas and lcd displays?

Hi Vikash,
the DVD-player itself will never care about deinterlacing. that´s what the user needs to do (or the author).

if you are encoding your assets interlaced they will be interlaced, if you are encoding progressive the will be progressive (on the disc). interlaced pictures wont be seen on TFTs or plasma, but in some cases the will, dependeing on the additional hardware of your screen.

in most cases I´ve seen interlaced on flat-screens it has been because of wrong field-dominance.

have you checked your DVD using a tube-reference-monitor?

cheers

danny
