All right. I checked this with some seasoned post directors before deciding to ask this, but even they were baffled with my issue.

I authored a DVD with some simple text buttons, simple color method, just varying opacities of black to distinguish between idle and selected. Everything playbacked great in our Macs, but I got a call from the client saying that the menu was doing "funny stuff". I checked the DVD on a PC, with different softwares, and I saw that the menu played differently depending on the software, sometimes radically.

These are the softwares and screenshots:

1 ) Windows Media Center

- issue: low opacity is ok, text "jumps"

2) Windows Media Player

- issue: green outline?

3) VLC Media Player

- issue: selectable text dissappears

4) CyberLink PowerDVD

- issue: really low quality

5) Apple DVD Player

- issue: normal, works well.

No idea what I might be doing wrong and I can't find anything on the forums... anyone gone through this? Ideas?

These are all player issues. Some players arent very good.

Also, you might consider using another Font....that one is too skinny for an 8Bit color overlay used on DVD. You'll probably find youe'll smooth out those edges with another font.
