Chapter Skip Forward strangeness

I'm getting the hang of DVD SP 4 but when playing back the short clip featured on my menu I'm getting strange results using the Chapter Skip Forward button. I reviewed some recent threads on this and didn't find it addressed.

I've created 6 video thumbnails/buttons that play correctly , each having an end jump to take you back to the menu, hi-liting the button for the nest clip to the right. (This is the flow or order I'd like in a Play All situation) If I use the Chapter Skip Forward button in mid clip playback more often that not I go to a clip out of that order. (The desired flow, that the remote follows is left-to-right, top to bottom) It's not clear to me where or how one can arrange or hard-wire a chapter order? I should add that after designing on paper the left to right clip/button placement, I've changed it within in DVDSP after having a change of heart after using the simulator.

Adding to the puzzle sometime the Chapter Skip Forward button does nothing when playing back certain clips.

Thanks,

Paul

Next / Previous is designed to skip between chapter within a track. Put a chapter marker 1 GOP from the end of the track. This way the next button will hit that chapter point then immediately go to its end jump.

This makes perfect sense but what would account for this command taking the user to other track/clips out of the aforementioned order?

It's early days for me in "authoring" but for this editor's demo reel I like the idea of the user being sent back to the menu after every track has played, but also (would) like it if the user could skip directly to playing back the next track with the "Next" button on the remote.

Hi Paul,

Like Eric said the prev/next buttons should move you around between chapters on a single track. Do you have your videos on separate tracks? If so, you might try putting them all on one track and using stories to create the functionality you describe.

Here's a link that describes the process:
http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/dvdsp_playall_russell.html

You will need to put all of your videos on the same track and create chapter markers at each new video. From these you will create separate stories. Your buttons will then be pointed at stories, and each story can have its own end jump.

I can't say for sure, but I believe the prev/next buttons would then jump to the next chap. marker on the track. However, on the first and last markers you should disable the prev/next buttons in UOPs. Software DVD players are notorious for skipping to erratic places. This procedure is documented in the DVD Studio Pro manual Chapter 17, p. 602. If you don't have a hard copy manual, try searching for "getting consistent previous and next button behavior."

Good luck,

Hi Brent,

Great stuff, I have my work cut out for me. Right now everything is a separate track (and short - average length 2min). I promise to study up on your suggestion. However it's strange that the Chapter Skip Forward on the DVD SP simulator does nothing, whereas a burned dvd on a Sony player (using the Next button on tthe remote) will send me to another track... just not the one I want. Wish there was a simpler way to override this and program the Next what I want and not the seemingly random next.*

Paul

p.s. I suspect the seemingly random next is a vestige of an old menu order mentioned in my first post "I should add that after designing on paper the left to right clip/button placement, I've changed it within in DVDSP after having a change of heart after using the simulator. "
