What format to use for playback on DVD players?
by Ry Tullis on Nov 5, 2009 at 5:01:15 pm

Hi all,

My question: What format should I export from Final Cut Pro so that I can play back on DVD players?

I shot on an EX-1 1080i60 (HD)

I want to maintain as good quality as possible but do NOT have blue ray discs.

According to the manual it seems like I should use MPEG-1 or MPEG-2, but I do not see these as options in exporting.

Can anyone help?

Thank you!

MPEG-2 is the only one you should ever use...

Thanks Noah,

Is this right - I should use compressor to encode it in the right format?

I found this site which has a lot of good information:

If I have to use compressor, what format should I export to originally from Final Cut Pro? H.264?

Depends what you shot but generally ProRes is a safe bet or just Send directly to Compressor. All of this is in your DVDSP manual btw...

Thanks.

But I exported with compressor to MPEG-2 and burned the disc in DVD PRO and it still doesn't play on my DVD player. Am I missing something?

Thanks for your help.

I've been using DVDSP since version 1.0 so please trust me on the MPEG-2 thing. If your disc doesn't work there's a mistake somewhere in the authoring. Or your DVD player doesn't work with DVD-Rs. Did you set a first play track; does it play on *any* DVD player?

I definitely trust you about MPEG-2 and I know I'm doing something wrong or not doing something I need to do.

I selected 'first play' but for some reason it doesn't play and I've tried a couple different DVD players...it does work on my computer, though.

On DVD players it says CANNOT READ DVD or UNKNOWN.

I'll let you know what happens when I figure it out. Thanks!

make sure you are not making a HD DVD. This is a common mistake. If you have you have to start the authoring over.

Yeah, that seems like it was the problem. Thanks so much!
