preserving quality of video when burning to DVD

Hey,
I'm burning a DVD in DVDSP but the quality of the video keeps getting degraded once burned to DVD.
The original file is 1024 x 576, Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) codec and 1.49 GB. It looks really good when played on my computer but once burned to a DVD the quality gets much worse, like the data rate is being heavily limited.
I'm wondering what kind of compression takes place when burning to DVD through DVDSP and if there's a way to work around it? Or at least try to preserve the quality of the original file?
Any insight would be helpful, I'm still learning about encoding and compressing video files so I'm sorry if this isn't as detailed as it could be. Let me know if any more information is needed in order to help me out.

Use compressor to create the mpeg, not DSP.
Retain your 16x9 material by scaling to 864x486, and you can use any number of presets in compressor.
Make sure in DSP to keep the track 16x9 letterbox. (It will display 16x9 on computers and widescreen tv's and letterbox on 4x3 sets).

Not sure about this info
NTSC DVD is always 720x480, no way around that. You don't want Compressor to handle the letterbox settings, you want it to be 16:9 and then in DVDSP you set the track to be 16:9 Letterboxed and it will do what is stated above.
But Teneya, where/why did you get 1024x576 size for a video file?

That is PAL format.
There is a ton of post and replies on quality of encodes, are you keeping it PAL or making a NTSC DVD, that could be some of your problem. It is better to encode with Compressor instead of doing it in DVDSP, once again, all has been laid out in this forum many times.
