Audio Strategy for Feature Film DVD
by Garnet Campbell on Sep 17, 2009 at 12:02:38 am

I'm Mastering a DVD for a feature film that has an extra audio track for the directors commentary.

I've successfully implemented a on/off script for selecting the < DIRECTORS COMMENTARY ON/OFF> audio track

The client has just thrown another audio track into the mix : A PG non swearing audio track.

I'm thinking this option should pop up after they hit play movie... Any suggestions on the way forward? I'm wondering how that option will affect the script that I already have in place...

Has anyone else done this before?

there is no reason to have a script at all. All you are needing is a menu where the user can choice which audio stream they want to listen to.

You can use a script to check the settings of the DVD Player's rating setting on if it is set for PG then you can automatically play that audio track.

But this is all done with an Audio Setup menu

You can still have button also on your Special Features menu to turn the Directors commentary on or off, with off really being just go to another audio stream. But this is where you can get into a script if you want. If the user had selected the PG version and then chooses the DirCom and then turns it off, what version of the movie comes back? You can do this with setting and checking GPRMs when the audio stream is set the first time. But this gets into more work then it maybe worth.

Tell your client kudos on making a non-swearing PG version of the audio tracks.

In addition to checking for the DVD players rating setting, I would give viewers an option for that PG audio track. I know that "we" know the ratings setting is available, but many viewers probably don't have it set on their player.
