No audio in encoded track; audio & video files encoded
by Jeanne Lewin on Sep 1, 2009 at 5:36:37 pm

Clip plays fine, good audio in FinalCutPro. Source audio rate: 48.0 kH2, 16 bit. I encoded clips in Compressor (fast encode, 90 min., not a lot of action in this yoga video). Imported encoded clip into StudioPro and NO audio; only video. Playing track alone in StudioPro results in no audio. Dragging the asset clip to a menu button and playing in simulation mode, still no audio. Trashed Compressor preference, re-encoded clips and imported back into StudioPro. Still no audio.

Compressor works because a motion menu with Quicktime animations and music encoded and plays in StudioPro.

Suggested strategies to bring in the audio? Thank you

there is a separate audio file. are you placing an ac3 preset to give you this files, did you bring this ac3 file into DVDSP, did you put this file on the tracks?

I used the fast encode preset in Compressor. Imported the video and audio encoded files in StudioPro and dragged the two assets over to the SP button on the menu (what I've always done; have been using SP since it began, not a "newbe") The audio didn't play in the track within SP, or when the button was activated in the simulation mode. I went back to Compressor after a restart, trashed preferences, ran system permissions and re-encoded same results. I did play the file in the preview (upper right of compressor dialog box before hitting "submit." The video and audio played fine. Repeated the process of encoding and bringing into SP and same results, no audio.

Thanks, Michael, for responding so quickly to my post.
Jeanne

2 things to try to see if the file is okay.
1) do a build and open the build in DVD Player, if it doesn't play

2) you need to burn a disc to test it out on a settop. This will let you know if the problem is the file or your computer with playing back ac3.

Also try making the audio a PCM.

If the problem is the ac3 file is blank you may need to totally re-install compressor.

Trouble shooting is a pain but you need to test things one at a time.

Michael, Regarding your suggestion to troubleshoot the integrity of Compressor: I encoded a different short time line as well as the audio ONLY file of the problem sequence. Created a mock DVD-SP project file and imported the assets. The timeline with the audio and video encoded fine, no issue with audio or video. The audio on the "problem" sequence failed to emit a sound. . .the client provided the miniDVD shot on a small DVD camera. He didn't pay attention to the audio in the menu so resume it was shot in 12 rather than 16/48.000. When checking in the sequence for the properties of the audio file in FCP, it said "16bits/48.000" Could this issue be a problem with the initial capture with the camera?

Thanks.
Jeanne

could be, but it shouldn't be hard to fix.

If you still your in and outs set or can reset them to the same place, just export an audio to aif of the timeline make sure the settings are 16/48 and then encode that.

Michael, I rendered out the time line in both aif and as a QuickTime movie. No audio. The only audio is in the timeline. The issue arose when it was time to make the DVD.

So you are saying if you export and aif there is no audio in QT Player?

What is the sequence audio set to, if it is not 16/48 change it to that and render the audio.

if this doesn't work you may want to post it in the FCP forum
