DVDSP - 2 issues > color and layered menu
by catz mora on Aug 19, 2009 at 10:59:37 pm

Hi,

I am in the process of finishing a project and I just need to burn a DVD...simple right?

I am having two problems the first is with color.

The video is almost entirely black and white, except at the beginning and end we have a red line on the title pages and again on the credits. They are fine in the video itself but when I build for the DVD the red lines all turn gray and red and gray and red. I am at a loss to understand why.

The second issue is the menu. I created a layered menu. Tested it, added it to a project, dropped it in as a background, it worked great...all my states were working fine. I made another menu for my final project...setting it up the same as the first menu and in the new project I don't get the option to drop it in as a background. If I select the file as the background, SP is not recognizing any of the button states. So I tried separating out the background from the overlay still no go...it's like it's not even there. I can't get the overlay to show in the viewer.

I am soo close to finishing this project ... help!!!

Thanks in advance,
Catz :)

In the second menu are you sure you are using a layered menu and not just a menu.

Red is no friend of m2v encoding. how thin, and what do you mean gray and red, like strobing? Is it a NTSC safe color?

Hi ty for responding :)

I am using the layered menu option, deleting the standard menu and setting the layered menu as the first play. I can even pull the first menu I created into my new project and it works but the new menu doesn't and each layer is labeled in the same way. The layers are labeled as follows:

Short Version - Normal
Short Version - Selected
Short Version - Activated
Full Version - Normal
Full Version - Selected
Full Version - Activated
Background

I pull it in as a photoshop file. DVDSP is acting like it's not even reading the file though. When I saved a separate background and overlay, it would show the background but not the overlay or the composite and it didn't read any of the layers...except for in my original menu.

The red is just a line...it's thin...and part of the movie itself. in the titles it works fine but in the credits the lines strobe...red to gray. So it's like:

Credits
---------------------------------- < red line

Names

During the few seconds it's on the line is on it starts red and then goes dark gray and then red again...the color is broadcast legal.

I am trying to get this ready to send off for duplication and am hoping to get this all resolved before the weekend...but I am at a loss as to how to fix this.

thanks,
Catz :)

If one file is working and one is not, check the file, make sure it is RGB, not CYMK and make sure there is no Alpha channel. Check size, or anything that is different between the 2.

As for the line. m2v hates red, try making is a slightly different shade, a little thinker. Also how are you view this, does it look different on the computer than on a TV?

I took a look at the file size I thought that might be an issue but it's not the problem. I also set it for RGB. Is there some glitch in the program where it won't read a layered menu if it thinks it all ready has one or something weird like that? I am reaching but the problem I am having makes no sense to me at all.

I will mess with the colors a little. I'll try adding the credits as a static page at the end and lay it over the credits that aren't working.

We are putting this together to be viewed on a TV in SD. There are some anomalies when it's viewed on different computer monitors but that's to be expected. It's been a problematic project from the start...still black and white images with motion put to them...we had a ton of pixelation. I'll be glad when it's all shipped off for reproduction :)

Thanks,
Catz :)

You should be able to use as many Layered menu as you like (although it is not the recommended method for professional authoring).

Please answer each one -
What is the pixel size of each pic? If ntsc is has to be 720x480
Does it have an alpha channel? has to be NO
What is the dpi set to? needs to be 72 dpi

Things to try, delete the PAR folders for the project, trash DVDSP preferences.

[catz mora] "I will mess with the colors a little. I'll try adding the credits as a static page at the end and lay it over the credits that aren't working." are the credits not working or is a red line at the top of the credits not displaying as you think it should. When trouble shooting you need to be specific, "not working" is not specific.

Understand, frustration adds to frustration, it just snowballs. I'll be glad to look at the menu files if you can upload them and provide a link as well as a still or a couple of sec of the problem credits.
