exporting DVD
by mike Durand on Jul 5, 2009 at 1:36:21 pm

I can't get this project off of my computer...It's a hi def FCP movie, the total size of the project is 5.5 gigs, (how can I compress it to fit within the confines of a 4.7 gig disc without sacrificing resolution?).

When I did finally gave up I burned it into 2 separate discs and my home DVD player wouldn't recognize the disc. I own and run a subscriber based surfing site and need to get this movie ready to show by Tuesday anyone who can steer me in the right direction will get one of our signature shirts.

Just shoot me a mailing address and T size to info@swellmagnet.com

Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike

First thing to understand is that DVD is standard def, not Hi Def so any encoding and authoring you will do will be standard Def 720x480 in the end. DVDSP will author HD DVDs but they wall only play on some Macs and defunct Toshiba HD DVD players - so thats not really an option here. You can author a Blu ray disc but DVDSP won't author BD - only Encore and Toast on the Mac.

Ok...now that we have that cleared up lets go over encoding. First thing to consider is the length of the program in minutes - not file size. Once you know this you can go anywhere online and get a bit budget calculator to determine your best encoding bitrate for your program. Here's one:

http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm

You simply plug in the length of video and type of audio you will use and it gives you the correct settings to use in Compressor.

Another important thing to know is that DVD is MPEG2 video ONLY. It supports 720x480 (4x3) and 720x480 ANAMORPHIC 16X9 so make sure you have the correct settings.

Another thing to considered is the type of audio to use. Virtually all professionally author discs contain Dolby AC3 audio. It's compressed but sounds very good and allows much more bandwidth than uncompressed audio. Only titles (recently anyway) Ive seen with uncompressed audio are concert or music titles which cater to the Audiophile end user.

Once you have your MPEG2 audio AC3 file, bring them into DVDSP, set your first Play and burn away.

BTW....like your site! I have some insane footage of El Porto from 4 years ago I was going to send you but never did....thanks for the reminder!

Oh....Large Please! Ha!!

to add a bit to Eric's post.

If your HD file is only 5.5 GB in size you must be dealing with a short run time.

Since you are making a DVD-R never go over 7 Mbps for the video (don't worry about have much of the disc is left empty) it will ensure better playback. Also I highly recommend using One pass CBR mode when you are at that rate, it is fast and better quality compared to VBR and once again more playback compatibility. Keep framerate and field order the same as your source.

Ditto on using ac3 audio, use .192 Mbps for stereo, change Dialog Normalization to -31dB and then on the pre-processing tab change the compressor to NONE.

Do I get a T-Shirt too? :-)

Hi Eric,

I thought I was home free. I ended up with the 2 desired formats...
the_end2-custom_setting.m2v the_end2-Dolby Digital Professional 2.0.ac3
but after burning my DVD it will only play on my computer and not my DVD player. I have the video settings in compressor set to

file format: MPEG-2
extension: m2v
stream usage: SD DVD
video format: NTSC
Frame rate: 29.97

thanks for any help.

I'm not Eric, I just play one on TV.

How did you burn the disc? Within DVDSP? Toast?

This is normally a burn setting problem when using Toast. Either leaving in the extra files that DVDSP puts in the Video TS folder or not using UDF. If burning in DVDSP are you using Format or Burn. If Burn try Format, uncheck Lossless Linking.

I did as you said and still no dice. Have I left any other stones unturned? There's still a shirt in it for you! It has full functionality on my computer but my DVD player won't read it.

Thanks, Mike

How are you burning the DVD? Be specified.

What is the first play set to?

Check to see if you have a "Display condition" set on the first play asset or disc.

I am using DVDSP and this is my first round with it so I have no idea what I'm doing. Not even sure what "first play" is. Where do I look and how do I check to see if I have a display condition? Sorry to take up so much of your time, I'm just running out of time.

Thanks, Mike

Have the Graphical View tab (top left open) click on gray space.

Look at the inspector palette Normally located lower left (See be labeled DISC). What does it say that the First play is set to? Then look to see if the select whatever the first play is set to and look in the inspector under the Advanced Tab and see if Display condition is checked, if it is deselect it.

Also in the graphical view the asset with the little bull's eye icon is the first play.

Also if you want to send me the project file I can take a quick look.

don't need the assets just the project file.

You can send it to onthecow (at) michaelangelodv (dot) com

My 1st play is the menu and from there it goes to track one.

I emailed you at your address I'd love to just send the file for you to check out.

Thanks and give me a mailing address and shirt size.

Thanks again, Mike
