I have a client who wants me to author a DVD project that will also have accompanying .PDF files on the DVD. Can I do this? How would I link them from the interface if I can?

I'd like to avoid creating a huge multimedia piece in installshield

Thank you in advance for your guidance and direction

You can add links to PDFs or weblinks using DVDSP by adding DVD Access to the DVD (it comes with DVDSP). I haven't done it in a while but if I remember correctly, this is the process...

In the bottom of the inspector box, there is a DVD-Rom section with a check-box for adding content. When you click it, a box in that section will become active and asks you to enter the path to the content that is saved on your DVD. You save the pdfs in a folder on your DVD.

And I believe to link to them, you create a normal button that takes you to menu (not a video track). Only that menu you are linking to is set to open the pdf. That can be set by entering the path again in the menu inspector box.

This is how I remember doing it. DVD Access get added automatically to the disc once you turn on the DVD-Rom box. It was pretty easy once I got the hang of it. But I remember it being a little tricky at first getting the exact file path right. You may have to search the help files to get that correct.

It is highly recommended that you DO NOT use DVD@ccess, this is nothing but trouble. Works okay on a Mac, a lot of trouble on Windows systems. Just put the PDFs in a EXTRAs folder and use a menu to tell people they are there.

I'm in the same situation. I have a client who wants 2 pdf files on their disk. I remember talk of some whacky issues...having to install something when playing etc. So in some ways it does seem better to just point to a folder. But aren't there some specific naming conventions?

Hi John,

Did you ever figure this one out? I am doing the same thing and have no idea how to program the DVD player to point to the folder. I don't want it to try and open just open the folder where the pdf sits. I got the DVD@cess working on a Mac but the PC side was a no go.

Any ideas,
Thanks,
Jim

There is nothing to figure out, it never worked well on PCs, It is a support nightmare is you put DVD@ccess on your DVDs. Nobody should be using this software/feature if they are distributing the DVD.

Use a menu on the disc that tells the viewer that there are files on the disc. They will find them if they are interested.

Thanks for that clarity Michael. Could you explain how I can put a data folder on a dvd that Im authoring through DVD SP? Do I build it through the software, giving me a Video TS and Audio TS folders, then somewhere in that directory add another folder with the PDFs?

cheers,

John

If you burn the DVDs in DVDSP you do it with the DVD-ROM button, you just point to the folder and it puts it on the disc.

This is an old thread some doesn't get viewed much if at all.

But you can put the folder anywhere on your drive but you point to the folder within DVDSP.

When Disc is selected, in the inspector, bottom, select the DVD-ROM content, click choose and then navigate to that folder. When you burn a disc in DVDSP it will add whatever is in that folder to the DVD Disc. But the first folder is not added so that is why I recommend you put all the files into another folder and then that folder into the folder you point DVDSP to.

is there literally an "ad extras" folder? or are you calling it an extras file? I don't see any way of adding an "ad extras" folder.

You create a folder in FINDER and name it"Ad Extra folder". Place your PDF inside. Then in DVD SP define this folder as ROM foder and that's it.
