DVD Studio Pro help!-Button Selection Overlays during Laptop/Computer Playback
by Michael Martinez on Feb 25, 2009 at 12:42:23 am

Hello,

Dvd plays back fine in normal dvd player, however when inserted into laptop/computer, rather than showing the text overlay and highlight when i scroll over the button with my mouse, i get no overlay or highlight at all. I have tried switching things around, but can't seem to understand why it wont work. I know the DVD player program on my mac recognizes where the mouse is as i scroll over the buttons, for the mouse icon changes from arrow to finger. i just would like to know how to enable the selection overlays to pop on when i scroll over using my laptop.

Did you do an overlay file for the buttons or did you do a layered Photoshop file for your buttons/rollovers? Also, did it work in DVDSP when you previewed it?

Sorry, also forget - yes it does preview fine in DVDSP, which is why its difficult to tell if im fixing the problem or not, hve to burn in order to find out. tedious.

also, the program i have used for laptop playback and on my other macs is the standard "DVD Player".

From what I recall, and I say that because it's probably been a year or so since I've done one, that is the problem with layered menus. They're fantastic when you want a number of things to happen/roll at the same time, but not so fabulous for playback on a computer. On a DVD player, the overlays from layered PSD files come up usually without problem, but on computers (mac or PC) the overlays only show up when you click on the item. Rather annoying since HEY, that isn't that the purpose of the overlay action? If the rollovers are simple, just an arrow pointing to text or something, I would go the route of using a flattened TIF as the background, and then doing an overlay TIF (white background, black highlight state), and then that should work no problem.

The reason is fairly simple. Each layer in a layered menu is really another menu in itself attached to a program withing a program chain in a menu domain. The reason it works fine on a set top player is because you are using a remote which allows the time for the laser to re-focus to another "layer". On a computer you have a mouse which is much faster when scrolled over a button, not giving a players laser the time needed. This will give you unwanted playback results and one of the main reasons why layered menus are not used professionally for the most part. In fact, some set top players can crash too.

Layered menus are cool and all but shouldn't be used unless its for yourself or in a hobby project. Don't make a client hate you!! Make it simple!!!

Nifty! Never knew the why before. And yeah, layered menus are groovy, but with DVD menu technology being in the dark ages, it's messy tempting clients with what kind of sort of works.
