Multiple-Disc DVD player recommendation please...
by Bill Thomas on Nov 11, 2008 at 4:07:36 am

Hi all,

I have a client who wants to run a series of video presentations 24/7 in their lobby.

They have a total of about 8 hours of video. My first idea was to author 3 or 4 2-hour discs and use a multiple disc DVD player that repeats the DVDs.

A second idea someone mentioned is a DVR-type unit (similar to the DirecTV, DISH units), to record the 8 hours onto, and let it repeat.

But I don't even know if they make standalone DVR units (that can record DVD content onto).

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Bill

Why not use something like AppleTV, not sure if you can loop the video but you maybe able to double it up and let it run for 16 hours.

Michael's on the right track. Apple TV is a good option if for no other reason than it's cheap, simple and has an HDMI connector.

A multiple disc DVD player would be much more prone to operator and mechanical error. You want something that's a little simpler. I've done many kiosk type office installations using Mac Minis. They're cheap and you get very nice resolution from H.264 pumped out of DVI to say a Cinema Display mounted in a wall case or a plasma monitor. Lots of player apps out there you can use to automate the playback. And if there's wifi access where it's installed you can even administer and update remotely. Try doing that with a multi-disc DVD player.

The one big problem with multi-disc players would be even if they would automatically go to the next disc (which I don't beleive they do) there would be some very distracting images on the screen which one disc stopped, the player turns and the next disc starts up. Would not be smooth at all.

There is just so many advantages with going with either the AppleTV or the MacMini as Noah has pointed out. Easy of use and better quality, seems like a no brainer to me.

I've seen MPEG-2 players that are strictly devoted to kiosk type presentations out there.
