Timecode doesn't match up for subtitles

Timecode doesn't match up for subtitles
by Cole Prine on Oct 14, 2008 at 1:42:48 pm

So, I finally got the subtitles back for the latest video...when I try
to import it into DVD Studio Pro, it would give me an error saying something
about timecode not matching up or an incompatible format. So then, I
realized that the timecode on the time code video I sent them starts with
'00' and the actual timecode embeded in the video starts with '01'. So I
went through and changed them all to '01' and figured, ok I got it. Nope,
I've just saw another little mistake...I use a time code generator to make the
timecoded dvd - it runs 30 frames a sec. where as my video runs 24fps. So
my timecode doesn't match up. ARGH! So, does anyone have any ideas on how I can get the time code to actually match up? I guess I could dump it to tape.

Hey Cole, there are a couple ways of adjusting the timecode. You can use a free program called Subtitle Workshop. There's a program called Lemony that runs about $1000.

I am more curious of the actual error you are getting. Time code not matching up and incompatible format are two completely different errors. What format is your Subtitles in? Text based or image based? Also could you copy and paste a the first page in here. Include all the Header info along with the first couple lines if time code.

Thanks,

Luke

I have .txt and a .stl, I think its actually the timecode issue, because like I said the time code generator runs in 30fps and my video only runs in 24fps. So, I need to get the timecode embeded in the video to actually run 30fps to match up to the 30fps timecode reading. Other wise, the subtitles will have to be completely reworked and this is a 35 minute video with around 600 titles. I think that the error message is just a general error message, because it says something about the timecode not matching up OR a fromat problem. I'll paste a few of the titles below from the .txt file. Thanks so much for giving my problem some attention!

When editing video in 24p you need to encode to mpeg2 with 3:2 pulldown on. This will set your video to 29.97fps. Then if you need any more adjusting just open your text file in Subtitle Workshop and you can offset the timecode as needed.

Hey everyone thanks for your help. I found two of the greatest tools to have when dealing with subtitles and they are free! Subtitle Xtractor and Subtitle TC-Converter. Both can be downloaded here: http://www.truevision-video.de/ With the Xtractor you can take subtitles from DVD STUDIO PRO, and convert them to a .stl. In DVD SP you just select the track that contains the subtitles, go to FILE>EXPORT>ITEM DESCRIPTION - this will give you a ,dspTrack file. You can then open this file using Xtractor and save it as a .stl, It also does some other stuff too.

The TC-Converter will actually take subtitles that are timecoded at 30fps, and convert them to 24fps, and vice versa. It actually will convert from/to many different time bases. These are some great tools.

Cole
