adding line 21 cc content to 16:9 video in DVDSP
by Jeff Bach on Oct 12, 2008 at 3:01:31 pm

Hi all

I imagine this is one more variant to the eternal ongoing chaos that is adding line 21 closed captioning to just about anything.

My hoped for goal is producing a standard DVD with legitimate closed-captioning that can be decoded by a viewer using a cc decoding device.

I shoot video using an HVX200/P2 so source is HD. Editing takes place in FCP 5.1.4. Output via FCP as NTSC in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Then into Compressor for conversion into mpeg2 and ac3 files and on into DVDSP 4 for creating the DVD menus and the final burn. Been through this workflow 5 times now.

Can I add a .cc file into the mix at the DVDSP4 stage? Will using 16:9 aspect ratio footage somehow mess up line 21 stuff? Or..since this is still SD, will line 21 content still work OK in this setting?

It seems doable, but it is always nice to hear from someone else who has ventured down the same path......
thx
Jeff

There is nothing you can do other than add the file in DVDSP so it is the decoder in the TV that handles the rest.

One thing, always ask for Pop On CC (not roll on) when working in DVDSP.

thanks for responding. I just found that very thing a few hours ago as I was hunting around educating myself on CC issues. I am surprised that this area of authoring is still such a cluster!@#$. Usually this equals an area of opportunity that someone responds to with a solution. So far no one seems to have done that......

It looks to me like CC-ing is so far only happening in response to government-centric projects. Very few on the private side seem to be bothering with it. Does this mean that the 50+ million (supposedly) people that are deaf or hard-of hearing are not a market worth pursuing??

My budgets are usually south of 10k, so adding cc to my project is something I really have to think about. The lack of a clean solution in this space, to me, is saying that the market for products with CC is not really there. Would love to read what other content creators are observing....

thanks

For me there is NO reason to put CC on a DVD. There is nothing that CC offers that cannot be done with subtitles, that you have control over and for me they look much better.

Leave CC for broadcasters, for DVD go with subtitles.

Jeff,
there ARE several solutions. One of them is outsourcing, which is (from what i've heard) DIRT CHEAP over there. You get a file back, put it in, done.
If you want to do it yourself, my subtitle prep tool outputs both CC and normal subtitles.

It has a learning curve, but once you've mastered it, it's quite fast.

Hi Bouke

Reads like it is just what I need. Hit your site, but it was not up. Some sort of mySQL error. Will check later. I'm hoping it is just what I need.

Don't know about dirt cheap. Then again nothing is easy as I keep discovering in my walk through life. And if it is easy, I'm learning to be a bit careful....
