DVD functionality different on DVD player
by Matt Vest on Oct 6, 2008 at 10:06:30 pm

Hi,
I've built a DVD and have 2 discrepancies that occur between how it plays back on TV-connected DVD players vs. how it plays on my mac.
1) on the DVD player, when I chapter forward through the feature, after the last chapter, it takes me to chapter 2 of the extended material (there is supposed to be no effect when pressing chapter forward from the last chapter of the feature--the end jump on the feature is set back to the main menu--this is not an issue when the DVD is played on my mac)
2) on the DVD player, a few (apparently random) buttons have thin yellowish lines around them when selected and when activated (they are set to black-normal, red-selected, black-activated, and they look fine when played on the mac).

Any ideas?

Lino,

This has nothing to do with the thread, you should post this in a new thread. And there is no info given by you to get any help. But more times then not this is caused by not burning the disc correctly, did you use toast to make the disc? Did you make it a UDF disc?

Issue 1) Different players will do different things so it is best to turn the Next Chapter off on the last chapter marker.

Click on the last Chapter Marker, in the Inspector go to the User Operation tab, deselect the "same as track" box at the bottom. THen under Playback Control select "Next Program" This will fix this problem.

Issue 2) This maybe from the fact that the TV is interlaced, how are you making for buttons and overlays?

Lino,
Have you tried encoding your footage in compressor first?

If not, here's what you do:
Open your mov file in compressor (or export to compressor from FCP) and then drag and drop the folder that says something like "DVD - best quality 90 minutes (obviously use another setting if file is more than 90 minutes)" into the little window area to the left of your file and hit submit. It will probably take a while, but you'll end up with a m2v file (video) and an ac3 file (audio) (BTW: do yourself a favor and don't try to open or click on the m2v file because it will take forever to load a preview and you'll have to wait for it-or relaunch finder).
Then open DVDSP and import those files as your assets. I'm not sure if this will fix your problem, but in my experience, using compressor to encode increases the playability of DVDs. Also, crappy discs are sometimes the culprit. Try to steer clear of low quality DVDs (e.g. Memorex). Easily available high quality DVDs are Maxell and Verbatim, but the best brands are probably Taiyo Yuden and Prodisc.
Hope this helps.
M

Thanks so much Michael! That did the trick.

After experimenting with the buttons, I think you're right about it being an interlacing problem. It seems to happen on both of the underline style buttons I've tried. When I make them fatter, some of them still get weird lines, but now it's only on the top or the bottom of the button. My workflow now is to find the size and position of the buttons that aren't having interlacing problems and then to adjust the buttons that do have problems to match the ones that don't. I think that will work (at least for the TV I'm testing on... hope it works for others as well, but not so sure.)

Thanks again,
Matt
