problem with button layout (on some dvd players)

Hi everybody!
This is a problem one of my students ran into, and I'm kind of stumped as to what's going on. I've checked the archives, and found some clues, but no definitive answers, so I'm hoping you can help.
'The DVD works properly on PC’s and MAC’s and on two Philips DVD-players I tested with. However, the remote control doesn’t indicate the right buttons when pressing up/down/right/left on a Pioneer and a Panasonic DVD player I tested with. On an expensive Sony DVD RDR HX Z25 Recorder the first (Subtitle) menu is skipped and the path is followed as if no subtitle is selected.
According to an internet source, the button problem is related to two wrong files that have to be deleted before burning the disc: VOB_DATA.LAY and .LAYOUT. I did that and since then it works better, but still not OK. Also setting the max bit rate to CBR and 7Mbps did not help.'
Another weird problem he ran into was that the DVD would not mount when the name was TWO_HEARTS_ONE_PULSE, but would mount when named 2H1P. Shouldn't DVDs be able to have names of up to 127 characters?
Any ideas why these problems would occur? If you want, i've put up a zip file that contains images of the layout of the DVD, the malfunctioning menu, the encoding settings and a text file of the encoding log (http://mysite.saeamsterdam.com/~500440/Archive.zip). Any help would be greatly appreciated!
