Quicktime Incompatible Format
by Elizabeth Bridenstine on Aug 22, 2008 at 2:54:00 pm

Whenever I try to import a Quicktime movie file into DVD Studio Pro (version 4.1.2) it says incompatible format.

So, every time I want to burn a DVD I have to convert my quicktime videos into MPEG2 and Dolby through compressor and then import into DVD Studio Pro.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Elizabeth

Perhaps the issue is in the FCP export. What setting do you use?

Well sometimes outside Editors give me the quick time files (h.264), and I burn them to DVDs, and sometimes I export them myself from FCP. I just usually export using Quick time conversion, H.264, high quality, key frame rate 24, frame reordering yes, encoding mode multi-pass, current dimensions.

How do you think I should export it?

I export all our in-house cuts of the pilot I'm working on in h.264, with a custom size setting of 720x405 (16:9 widescreen aspect ratio).

When I try to import into DVDSP, I get the incompatible format too.

But when I use iDVD to burn discs - no problems at all.

H264 is a highly compressed "Delivery" codec and not an editing codec. The since the quality will be greatly reduced so you should NEVER do this yourself. If clients send you this format and cannot provide anything else than your workflow will need to be to convert it to m2v with compressor and bring that file into DVDSP.

Also there is no way to make ac3 files of the audio from with DVDSP and also every DVD should be using this for better playback and to give more room for the video. ac3 is the standard video and the only people that use PCM (uncompressed audio) are high-end music concert that have been professionally mastered and people that don't know any better.
