How to burn a DVD from HD 24p?
by Chris Heuer (Jonas Grumby) on May 13, 2008 at 1:55:48 pm

Hello, I am working on a project in Final Cut that is HDV 1080 24 (that's the Final Cut timeline setting)(1920x1080 at 23.976fps). I've never used DVD Studio Pro before and have no idea what it's capable of.

I got Final Cut Studio for this project and have had no time to actually READ about any of it. I'm just learning as I work! My question is...

Do I have to export a movie in SD resolution at 29.97 or will DVD Studio handle (and handle it well) the conversion?

As I said, I have no time for reading through the manuals until the job is done and I'd like to know how much effort is needed to get a solid DVD burned. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Export from Final Cut using the EXPORT -> COMPRESSOR setting.

Find any DVD preset and duplicate it. Alter the duplicate so that it's a 23.98 file with a 16x9 aspect ratio and a progressive field dominance.

If it's under 75 minutes set it to a CBR with a bit rate of 7.0.

If it's more, experiement with VBR settings.

Apply that pre-set and a Dolby audio pre-set to the export and go for it.

Take the video and audio file into DVD studio Pro. Put them on a track and make sure the track is set to "16:9 letterbox".

Then go from there in terms of menus and stuff, but those are the basics on the video part of it.

Thanks! This is a 5 minute short so CBR it is!

Everything was digitized at 23.976 which is (I believe) pretty much the same as 23.98. Do you think there will be any stuttering issues? Either way, I'll find out this evening. Thanks again for the response.

Both frame rates are the same thing. Some programs just round it up when listing it.
