Subtitles with semi-transparent background box - how?

I'm looking for a way to incorporate a semi-transparent grey box around the subtitles in a specific project.
Is it possible to have DVD SP generate a box behind the text, or would you recommend using the outlines for text instead?

I think the only way of doing this is using an external subtitle generator (which is recommended anyway if you are doing lots of subtitles). You need one that can create the STL file plus the graphics - I think Belle Nuit can do what you need
