16:9 subtitles off screen on some TV's
by Hilleke Doevendans on Apr 24, 2008 at 2:51:24 pm

Hi there,
I'm working on a DVD with 16:9 video. I’ve imported subtitles, framed them nicely on my 16:9 video (right on the edge of title safe, i.e. I can't move them any lower), but when I play back on a widescreen TV (or a pro 4:3 monitor) the subtitles drop off the bottom of the screen. They playback fine on computers and in the simulator.
My track display mode is set to 16:9 letterbox, and my subtitles are imported from text files (font = Arial, size = 24, centred). I've also tried setting my display mode to 16:9 pan-scan but this pushes the gfx off the side of screen so isn't an option.

Any ideas? Is there a quick fix, or do I have to re-export everything letterbox?

help!

Some 16:9 monitors overscan a bit. You're better off going well within title safe to account for this.

Yep, I've taken that into account. It actually seems as if the placement of the subtitles has moved. e.g. they are just below a persons chin when played on a computer, but on certain TV's they'll be well below that persons chin. If the TV's set to letterbox, they appear over the black bar. Is there any way to avoid this?

Check you settings on the tracks- should be 16:9 letterbox.
