Formatting Failed - Help Appreciated
by Les Kaye on Apr 5, 2008 at 1:22:39 pm

The mpeg 2 file is 5.29 GB and the aac audio is 135 MB. I used the same type of DL disk (Memorex) that I've used previously. Simulation worked fine. The video and audio tracks seem fine when played and spot checked. The Burn was going smoothly until the very end when the following error message appear after completion:

"Formatting was not successful. Layer 0 exceeds the maximum layer size allowed. Please choose a suitable marker location that will support this condition."

The DVDSP log has this, with error report at the end:

I burned an earlier version of this project a few months ago and while half the length then, it all went smoothly.

What did I do wrong? Thanks (again).

[Les Kaye] "Formatting was not successful. Layer 0 exceeds the maximum layer size allowed. Please choose a suitable marker location that will support this condition. "

Your layer break is in the wrong spot. It needs to be earlier in the video.

SIDE NOTE: you listed your audio as aac if this is the case DVDSP is changing it to PCM uncompressed (1.54 Mbps) because aac cannot go on a DVD. Go back to your original audio and make it an ac3 file instead.

I ran into the same error the other night.

I just set the layer break marker earlier... re-did the build....and everything was fine.

Initially, I let DVDSP automatically set it, but it sometimes can get it wrong

Thank you Michael & John. How and where do I set the layer break marker? Other than previously backing up to DL media, this is the first time I've ever authored to it - so I don't know about layer breaks. Also, does this do anything with my regular chapter markers (of which there are 5).

I'll try to check out the manual as well.

Someone probably responded already but in the disc/volume tab select dual and try "auto" for it to select a layer break point. Probably want OTP rather than PTP as well.

[Michael Sacci] "Go back to your original audio and make it an ac3 file instead"

Just a typo - it was ac3. Thanks Michael.
