Which vertical offset for 16:9 subtitles?
by Urban Skargren on Mar 26, 2008 at 9:12:41 pm

Hi!

Short version: Which vertical subtitle offset do you use in Letterbox 16:9 dvd projects?

Long version: I'm making a 16:9 Letterbox SD dvd with subtitles. I'm working hard to get it good on all kind of tv sets. I have experimented with different vertical subtitle offsets. Until now I found an offset of +12 was good (it's slightly out of the text safe zone and looks balanced in the DVDSP 16:9 preview, and also looks ok a 4:3 tv, in one 16:9 tv and on my 16:9 computer screen), but today I tested it on another 16:9 tv, and then the subtitles appeared so low that only the upper row was visible. This tv was a very expensive Pioneer 42" HD plasma screen, but it didn't even have a standard 16:9 mode, only some kind of "Wide film" and "Standard zoom" alternatives. This heavy Pioneer thus automatically showed the dvd in a false, stretched format, with bars up and down. If I used the "Standard zoom" the picture was ok, but the subtitles' lower row where out of the frame as I mentioned!

Well, I can't control my viewers tv sets, but I can control the vertical offset of my subtitles.

How do you compensate for different tv sets when making 16:9 Letterbox SD dvd material with subtitles? Which vertical offset do you use? If I put them higher I'm afraid they will apper too high on some tv:s.

I am using Helvetica text, 29 size, made in DVDSP.

Thanks

Urban

Text size sounds a little big to me- I'd drop it down to 24 and always keep well inside the title safe. I'd even go towards action safe just to be sure on all TVs. On some 16:9 monitors the underscan from top to bottom can be quite severe.
