changing the dvd authoring speed to 2x or 4x in dvdsp? My guess is this is not possible and the best way is to build in dvdsp and burn the vts using an authoring software. I see a lot of people on here use toast, would it be a good idea to get that myself. Using nero on a PC at moment.

Can't change the burn speed in DSP. You can use any burning software, but don't forget to pull out files: Project.layout, DATA.lay and maybe PAR folder, from the VIDEO_TS folder.

I burn 99% of my proof and Masters in DVDSP with 8x media (Maxell high end media) for a couple of years now and I have had next to zero problems with them.
BTW - The newer versions of Toast (7 and 8) pull the bad files out for you if you use the From Video TS folder option.

burning at 8x for masters? don't you get problems on older dvd players and pc drives. A lot of drives can't read dvd written higher than 4x.
I ran into problems on a clients laptop and pc because I did it 8x

It all depends on the burner and the media itself. I use Plextor and Taiyo Yuden at 8x all the time and never had problems. Of course, I play it safe when burning master DVD-Video, using 4x, but I make most of my masters using DDP on DVD-R at 8x. TY Grade A pass tests at speeds higher than 8x, TY Value pass tests 8x and less.

A Master is what does to the replicator so there is no concern with older players or PCs. But that being said I burn everything at 8x speed. I also use top of the line Maxell, I pay close to 50 cents per disc in bulk but I have no problems. The commom thread is high quality media. No retail disc. One bad disc to a replicator cost time and money to resend a FedEx all savings are lost in one job.
Here is another thing I'm crazy about - nobody but me and the mastering house touches the my Master DVD. The client gets a proof master and I send a diiferent master to be glass mastered.
