DVD colors look washed out blacks not saturated. What settings are best?
by Jerome Robbins on Aug 28, 2006 at 8:30:23 pm

I am new to DVD Studio Pro4. I am on a OS 10.3.9 Mac G-4 Dual 144 with Superdrive.
I burnt to an A06 Panasonic Drive on Verbatim R- disc

The 10 minute photo montage was edited in Media 100i XR 8.2 and exported as a Quicktime Movie.
I then imported the audio and video to DVD Studio Pro and created my menu. I then just hit burn to burn a DVD directly from the program. the DVD plays fine and the menu works as expected. However, I am very disappointed in the colors being washed out and the blacks not being rich black like they were in my NLE.

I looked at my preferences on DVD Pro and they are set:

Aspect 4:3 Field Order: Auto Mode: one pass VBR Bit Rate 4.0 mbps Max bit rate 7.0 mbps
motion estimation Better Method: Background encoding

Are there changes for me to make here? Best instead of better?

I have read posts about using Compressor. Is this a step I missed and need to include?

I would like to understand the appropriate steps to get the best quality possible with DVD Pro. I previously was going firewire directly to a standalone DVD recorder with great quality results but no menu capabilities.

any suggestions would be appreciated. This is all new to me.
thanks,

jerome

What are you watching the DVD's on? Is it the same monitor as for your NLE? Is it a the TV you have hooked up to your DVD player? Gotta ask. If it;s the same monitor as for you nle, have you tried to playing the quicktime movie on it (the one you imported into DVDSP) to see how that looks? Just to make sure that DVDSP is your problem.

I am watching on the same monitor for the NLE and the DVD. I froze a frame from the NLE as it was running then swithched inputs and froze the same image from the DVD. I could then switch between input channels to compare.

I checked the size of the QT Movie from the NLE and it was 4.52 GB and that is why it fit without compression. I went back into the NLE program and Exported with no compression as a QT Movie, it is now 11.79 GB.

I deleted the previous video asset from DVD Pro and have Imported the larger file.

So, next step for quality? In the StudioPro Preferences on Encoding should I set it on Best ane what about the bit rate?? It is now set for 4 Mbps and 7 Mbps max. Is the Ok? I guess it is the default settings.

So then do I export it from DVD pro and take it into Compressor? Any suggestions for Best settings there?

thanks for your response,

jerome

Hi Jerome,

I guess you are working on MAC only, exporting QTs from Media 100 for Compressor? I have similar problems with Clips exported from a Windows Media Composer 12. Anyway, you can check your export settings in Media 100, I guess you won't get your problem solved in Compressor or DVDSP. Check the colorlevels and try other export settings, maybe try another codec. Which one are you using now?
Also it looks like you are encoding directly in DVDSP, try to avoid that and import your QT into Compressor for MPEG-Encoding. You got far more things to tweak there. If you render in DVD-SP, set menu-rendering to software-based... gave me a huge leap qualitywise!

If you find any solution to your problem it would be great if you could reply to this thread or send me an email since it could also help solve my problem. I tried everything but I guess my problems is the Windows/MAC crossplatform-workflow.

Karim
