 | overlay / color mismatch
by pshpsh on May 5, 2006 at 10:51:09 pm |
I'm creating a DVD that uses a small colorful icon to show that a menu item is selected. I've created
the menu using an overlay that hides the icons until they are selected, by making the "normal" state of the overlays the same color as the background - it works well.
The problem is when I view the menu on Apple's DVD player the "normal" state overlay color is a little off, causing you to see the boxes I made around my icons. But when I burn it to DVD and play it on a DVD player, it looks fine. It also looks fine in the simulator inside DVDSP. Any ideas what's causing this?

Ya, I've actually seen that tutorial and that's what I'm doing. Except the color is a bit off when I preview it in the Apple DVD Player...

Any other ideas? In the tutorial he mentions the problem I'm having, but doesn't really offer a solution other than pick different colors. As I didn't do the design, I can't change the color choice. Does anyone know why the colors are off so much?

If you just want them to be invisible set them to transparent. Color to "0." The colors in an overlay will never be exact.

sacci - I'm using the "mask overlay" method, so I'm setting the overlay (in it's normal state) to 15, in order to obscure it (since the overlay color matches the background color).
Why are the colors not matching? Does it have anything to do with the mpeg2 compression... like the signal is being clipped to broadcast safe or something? Just trying to avoid using a photoshop layered menu.
I'm sure this is a pretty common thing... any DVDSP experts know the answer? Don't let me down COW!

Sorry, missed the marking part.
Actually what you are going (the masking) is not that common, I have seen it a few times, Diana Krall Live in Paris comes to mind, but the mask normally fills a box or hidden graphically and are not seamless. Not saying it is not done but I don't think it is a common practice.
A couple of things I can think of is to try using a mask with 2 extra colors and map them to the same color but change the opacity level so it feathers into the background. Also make sure you are proofing a disc on several tvs and players so there is no surprises if you can get it to work.
The other thing is try adjusting the background to match the overlay if possible. Make sure the menu, if a still, has a video safe filter applied to it. Use muted colors over bright ones.
Note in the tutorial it states the the color matches better on a TV vs a computer.
