 | resolution problems on cross dissolves.
by hi focused on May 1, 2006 at 11:07:29 pm |
In some cases when I have cross dissolve the resolution gets really pixilated. usual when it's between two slow motion clips. I export out of FCP to Compressor and then to DVD studio pro. My VBR rate is set to two pass and best so that shouldn't be it and the mb settings are between 5.0 and 7.5
Any ideas would be great.

I found this to be an issue when using the high quality 2-pass settings- appears to be a bug in Compressor 2. Try the CBR settings and see if it goes away.

so you're saying if I use a one pass VBR which is supposedly less quality than two, it will solve that problem? I will try and see and let you know what happens.

No,
Constant Bit Rate (CBR) NOT Variable Bit Rate (VBR),
and quality is dependent on more factors than the just the # of passes.

Ok, I'm still getting the pixels on the dissolves with one or two pass so what is the CBR? I know about the VBR but what is CBR?

Constant Bit Rate

But I read that a constant bit rate one pass isn't as high of quality as a two pass or one pass VBR because you flucuate the quality as need be for the video. So are you saying going with a constant will actually produce better quality than a VBR.

Whoa,
VBR fluctuates the rate/quality, that's it's basis.
But there are also bugs in Compressor's VBR behavior including spiking.
There are many factors that decide quality,,
Try CBR and post back.

the 2-pass bug went away from me by using 1-pass VBR. I didn't use CBR and the 1-pass looked much better than 2-pass. I could replicate the macroblocking in 2-pass.
