I'm not sure what the problem is - but the DVDs that I burn playback fine in some units, but not in others.
The rate of discs that do not work is rather high.

Details:
DVD Studio 4
G5 2.0ghz, 2Gig of Ram
LaCie External writer, as well as the G5 internal drive

When my project is finished, I hit the yellow/black burn button and pop the disc in.
It plays fine in my computers (Mac and PC), cheapie DVD home units and the more expensive ones.

But i consistently hear from friends and family, either or; they do play or they don't.
I get the same results whether I use the internal drive, or the LaCie.

I appreciate any and all feedback.

Best,
Jim

+R or -R discs? -R work in more DVD set top boxes.

Hope this helps-

Matrix -R

I just spoke with an associate of mine at a dub house.
They recommend that I try Taiyo Uden discs.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Thanks

Mea culpa.
I don't know what my bit rate is ... or should be.
My bad.
Any ideas?
However, I always use AAC3.

The videos I tend to produce are under 60 minutes, and the majority are under 30 minutes.

try this...take the same project and use Compressor or QT to encode your MPEG at 6.5 mb/s CBR (constant bit rate) Also use Compressor to encode your audio to AC3 not AAC3 (you might be getting this confused with AAC.

Here's a good tutorial:

http://www.editorsbin.com/apple/fcp/tutorials/bypass_compressor/index.html

Bit rate is SO important. High bitrates will stall players sure as sh*t. And using AC3 audio keeps that overall bitrate lower than using AIF files which are uncompressed.

Also use good media as well and burn at 1X spped

Do all this and replay the disc in the same player...let us know how it turns out.

Hi Eric,
Thanks for the reminder about bit rate.
I remembered seeing a tutorial on ken stone's site about exactly that:
http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/compressor2_custom_presets.html

I do prefer to use compressor over qt conversion.
but the tutorial you suggested is quite fascinating, also.

I will do a test burn using a one pass (aka cbr) and post the results.

Thanks again for helping to jog the old noggin.

Yes...Always use compressor over QT - sorry it was the only tutorial i could find real quick But it gives you an idea - same process - different app.
