hi all.
i have encoded a m2v (and an AC3) file via compressor that is about 1 hour 40 mins long. the bitrate was around 3.2.
i have sucessfully build and burnt it to dvd (via dvd studio 4) and am getting bizarre results.
if i play the dvd in a normal dvd player after about an hour of playing the title, i get artifacts all over the footage(and eventually it will freeze).
whats really bizarre is if i start the dvd player again (5 mins later) it will play the same section perfectly. i have been advised that this could be a bitrate issue (it being too low for some players). i have tried it on 3 different machines and get the same result in more or less the same area of the dvd each time.
i am re-encoding the footage at a 5.0 bitrate (which i have had the same problem with previously) in the hope it might cure the problem.
has anyone had this before? what can i do, because it is begining to drive me around the bend!
help really appreciated..

i would also like to add that this is an NTSC progect from a PAL source (i rendered a seperate NTSC DV Quicktime file from my PAL Sequence - which i then brought into compressor to encode to a M2V).
it is 1 hour 48 mins long and i always used the recommended presets from with in compressor.
i have tried a number of things. spliting up the video into three sections, and lowering the bitrate to 3.2 (just to try and get it to work, it hasn't). i am working on a dual G5 2gig with 2gb of RAM, and burning the disc straight out of DVDSP4)
i have a client screaming at me, that every disc i give him freezes up and i don't knwow what to do...
other than go PC...(perish the thought)

Probably the NTSC to PAL convert- not really FCP's capability- that is causing the problem. You need to convert it properly. Try nattress.com for a proper format convertor.

hi noah (would love to see your film sometime , that you mentioned on your last podcast).
would the format conversion make a huge difference? it is already done before i encode to m2v, and then the finished M2V file seems to play okay.
is the nattress standards convertor much better than quicktime? i know you must have made many copies of your film for PAL and NTSC - have you had a problem like this..
don't really want to buy a plug in unless it look likly to cure my problem...
thanks

Absolutely- the format conversion in FCP is not intended for usage on DVD.
