For anyone interested, I *finally* got to burn a dual-layer disc, though there were many steps I had to take (with help from the Apple forum):
1) I had to *manually* determine the dual-layer break point,
instead of allowing DVDSP3 to automatically determine it.
This was to insure that the first layer of media had more data than the second.
Have a look at the DVDSP3 manual for exactly how to do this, and why.
I also had to make sure that "Lossless Linking" was turned off.
2) I had to Build/Format the project from within DVDSP3,
because Toast does not create the necessary formatting.
3) When I tried to do this, DVDSP3 did not recognize my DVR-108 as a device to which it could format!
Of course Toast, as a 3rd party software, recognized the drive --
but Mac OSX needs a patch in order for Apple apps (such as DVDSP3) to enable burning.
I got OSX to recognize the drive by using Patchburn (
http://www.patchburn.de/download.html )
4) Once DVDSP3 recognized the drive, and I tried to start formatting, a new error occurred:
I received a "Power Calibration Area Error" from DVDSP3's Build Log.
5)From
http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/computer/faqs/faq_22.html :
A Power Calibration Error is caused by the inability of a DVD-RW drive to use a DVD-R or DVD-RW disk.
DVD-R and DVD-RW disks themselves have information written on them, within this Media ID code there is information that the drive uses to calibrate itself to the disk, when a drive first starts to write to a disk it will burn a small amount of data to a calibration area on the disc, using the calibration information in the Media ID code, and then try to read back the data that it has written. If it cannot be read, then disk will be ejected and fail with a power calibration error.
A power calibration error is normally caused by problems with the media. Should you be experiencing problems with your drive or the media, we recommend that a disk from a good quality manufacturer be used to test it.
6) So! I was using Verbatim DVD+R DL discs, which were supposedly pretty good, but they weren't working.
I picked up some Memorex DVD+R DL discs, popped them into my Pioneer DVR-108, and FINALLY the project formatted to disc successfully.
Why it didn't like the Verbatim discs will forever remain a mystery.
The formatted disc played fine on my set-top DVD player, and in the client's set-top and laptop, and we sent it off to the duplicator.
7) Ya think we'd be out of the woods, right? Friday, the duplicator calls and says:
"The 'seamless playback flag' is not set correctly and we need a new master disc from you."
8) When I authored the disc, I left the "seamless" setting "OFF" because, as it says in the DVD Studio Pro 3 manual:
"While the seamless layer change would appear to be the best choice,
some DVD players do not support the seamless feature, and may stop playing the disc once the switch point is reached.
For that reason, it is strongly suggested that you use the default non-seamless layer change setting."
9) So, I am waiting to hear from the duplicator on Monday.
Anyway, hope this is helpful to y'all.
