Remixing old movies? What's my learning path?
by sangohan on Aug 17, 2007 at 9:42:54 pm

Hi there -

I want to remix old movies together. Like the Gap commercial with Audrey Hepburn. Take Luke Skywalker, composite him out, and make him fight against Bruce Lee's nunchuks. Or something like that.

I know basic final cut and imovie editing, but little more than that. So, I know this may seem silly, but perhaps you can help me figure out what the learning process would be to achieve my goal above.

Questions:
- Is this feasible? Or just too ridiculously time consuming? (Note: quality doesn't have to be high at all, just watchable)
- What software? Shake?
- What's my learning path? Books, DVDs--what do you recommend?
- Does anyone do this? Any communities of old movie remixers out there?

Thanks so much in advance!

Anything is possible, but this will also be ridiculously time consuming. Since you don't have the bluescreen footage you are going to have to cut out your actors frame by frame.

Check out this expose on Highend3d.com
http://www.highend3d.com/shake/tutorials/general/17.html

It details the making of Kung Pow - Enter the Fist which did a lot of the things you have been thinking about using Shake.

Shake would be a good application to try this in. I am pretty sure it would be impossible in Final Cut Pro. Check out some Rotoscoping tutorials in Shake. You will need this to generate the necessary mattes.
