Matte Wipes in Apple Shake
by Robgilpin on May 14, 2007 at 3:32:24 am

I'm putting together an edit for short shot on DV. In the short I need to create a series of Matte wipes. The scene takes place in a church so we shot several left to right dolly shots of pillars and pews whipping past the camera. I'm editing on Final Cut Pro, however the pillar in this church has sharp angles on it and I can't use a 4 or 8 point matte. So my questions: is it over kill to roto this in Shake? And how would I do this? Or would it be better and easier to use after effects? (Which I haven't really used.)

Would love some advice,
Robert Gilpin

Shake is a pretty efficient little app. If you're comfortable with it, it's really not "overkill" to fire it up to get the job done. :-) AE is equally capable of this kind of task, but (unless learning AE is a secondary objective of the project) there's no particular reason to use AE over Shake if you're already familiar with Shake

Using Shake's RotoShape node sounds like a good place to start. Beyond just the shape flexibility, there are also many controls for edge blur which can help with any focus or motion based bur in the original shots.

For transitions, choose one of the two shots being spliced as the "overlay" shot .... the one that is "on top" of the other. Then send that shot over to Shake and animate a rotoshape to make a mask that either "removes" or "reveals" this shot over course of your "transition".

Well, that's one approach anyway .... as always, many options. :-)
Maybe there will be others with alternative suggestions.

Have fun!

Do I splice the two shots in Final Cut or in Shake? That's the main thing I couldn't figure out. Because Shake doesn't really have any options as far as adjusting the timing of the two shots. The tree I set up uses an Atop node to put the one on the other then I use a sub node to remove the roto'd area. But the two clips play at once, so of course the timing is completely off.

So instead I should just use shake on the first shot to cut a hole though the area where I want the next shot? Then take it back to Final Cut?

Thanks,
Rob Gilpin

You can do either of these things. If you think that you may want to edit the timing later, then it's best to cut the hole & render that with an alpha to bring back into FCP.
