List of all shake tutorials currently up here and anyone else keen to make some tutorials?
by Andrew Shanks on Mar 2, 2007 at 3:01:40 am

Hey guys, just wanted to say the link for shake tutorials on Cow is here (it has all of mine and Capt Mench's efforts there).

http://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/page_wrapper.cgi?forumid=154&page=htt...

If anyone else wants to do a tutorial or two, speak up, I'm sure Kathlyn (the mistress of moo) would love more submissions and would be interested in getting some more forum leaders for the shake area here, ...Mark, David, Peter, any of you guys interested?

Cheers,

andrew

I'm interested :)
Maybe a seriers on expressions?

I'm a leader on the Media Studio Pro Cow board from a while back, but that board is very slow these days.
Would be happy to participate more here if you need a hand.

BTW...Your tutorial series has been fantastic.
Much of what was covered in my MFA compositing classes and even some of the tricks I learned from spending a tiny bit of time with Steve Wright where coverd. It's amazing to see quality content like this available for free.
Congrats on a job well done Andrew.

You know what I'd really like even for my own personnal needs...

A basic of compositing... even reading and re-reading the manual I get a sense of when things need to be concontaminated (hee) and when things can be split and rejoined...

But when say I want to build a shadow I still have to go back to the books and line nodes up like they have them... but I don't know why.

Even yesterday - I was CCing an element and I ended up using a switch matte with the CC on the left side... why?? I don't know - it just worked.

Another thing - rotoshapes... where to put the rotoshapes that still gives you access to the original FileIn node... etc etc etc.

Good response guys. Mark I have emailed you with Kathlyn's email address, and to generally give you some grief about leaving the UK and coming down under ;-) Thanks heaps for the feedback Nick, ...really I still feel like a bit of a Shake noob myself (AE being my main area of expertise, Shake being something I have only delved into heavily in the past 6 months), give Kathlyn a yell and see if she can pop you across onto this forum as I'd personally love to learn more about scripting/expressions/etc.
Capt, I'll see if I can maybe come up with a tutorial or two to cover things you have raised (the job I was meant to do this week has just got canned, so I'll have some free time, ...although the beach is calling (I love summer :-)).

Cheers,

andrew

Funny -- I came home early too today and started watching your tutorials.

You actually have lots of those "extras" in your tutorials... min... max... etc... why you BUILD a key and why not just drop everything on a single keyer... etc.

But still - I've got to get Wright's book... but for now have been pouring over the Encylopedia of Visual Effects too.

Clueless in California (I know, redundant)

Do not pass GO. ;)
Get Steve's Book .... now. :)

The new edition is loaded with new info covering digital that was not in the original book.
Also, Steve's approach is very nodal ... very Shake.

Totally second that, I love the new version of Steve's book, I bought the first one and found it tough going, but when they revised it they took on board readers feedback and I think got it just right, ...everything you read in there is so easily translated into Shake, ...you'll read things and go "woah, what a cool idea" and can't wait to roll your own version the next time you jump on shake, ...also he has non-application specific tutorials free online that go with what he is illustrating in the book, very cool. The other fx textbook (for want of a better description) is Ron Brinkman's "The Art and Science of Digital Compositing", ...which even though its getting on a bit with age, it is still a classic for the reasons behind fx techniques. Of the two, Steve's new revision of his book is the most instantly useable for putting theory into practice, but for backgrounders and more depth on the various subjects compositing entails, Ron's book is a good hefty read (and again, Ron is one of the guys who came up with Shake to start with, so the ideas in the book translate well :-)

How to save the video-tutorials?
by rafalaos on Mar 3, 2007 at 12:40:47 pm

Hi,
i've downloaded some video tutorials from the cow and i've tried to save them in my hard disk to watch them off-line. I live in a place with a 28kbps average data-rate Internet connexion and to download 1Mb can take 5 to 10 minutes. Whenever I desconnect from the web, I loos the file, and if I want to watch it again is another long downloading. Is it possible to save them properly?Cheers,
Rafael

I know the pain of slow internet connections. Do a google search for Flash Saving Plugin, I haven't used it but from what i've heard its a free plugin that allows you to save flash animations (video?) and also allows you to search through your cache for any flash animations lurking in there (so you might even be able to recover the previous sessions without having to go online and wait ages for the download again). No guarantees on if it'll work, but its an idea.

Goodluck,

andrew

Hi,

Sorry I know this thread is a little old, but just wanted to say that I usually download Creative Cow video tutorials through iTunes by subscribing to the podcasts and afterwards I don't need to be connected to the internet to watch them over and over. The only thing is that they are mostly geared towards After Effects. Is there any way that these Shake tutorials can be linked to the Creative Cow podcasts as well? Keeping my fingers crossed!

Cheers,
Onna
