Note, if the edges seem a little too soft (even with tweaking the amount of blur) try using a median filter, ...depending on the footage it can sometimes make for a more defined edge. :-)

Hey Andrew,
Just wanted to chime in to say that was a fantastic tutorial!
Great job breaking down the process and explaining the purpose of each step.
Cheers!

Thanks for the feedback Nick, I totally suck at doing these online tutorials but there seems to be a need for them so I'll do my best. I'm just waiting for the next tutorial to go online (keying). Hopefully it'll be up today.

Cheers,

andrew

Nice, and all... I couldn't see the entire tutorial, but I can see where it was headed.

BTW, there is a Nattress plug-in that does DV smoothing in a few flavours of 4:x:x. essentially doing the same thing, within FCP or Final Touch.

Yes, it's a trick pretty much as old as DV (and trying to key it), ...I had a guy on the AE forum ask if it could be done in AE and I was able to easily rattle off the way to do it in there. There are even shake macro's to do similar things:

Its handy to know what the plugins are doing in case you are working at a facility that isn't running them and you have to deal with a nasty DV situation.
