Shake 4 by Marco Paolini
by frank77n on Nov 29, 2006 at 6:10:08 pm

Hi, I am trying to get into Shake with the book by Marco Paolini. Now I get stuck with the onscreen controls.
Shake has three different options fot the controls. The option where the controls are always on, as well as the one where the controls are always off works exactly like described in the book. For the third option the book says "the control disappear if you move the image. They reappear when you releaese the mouse button". But nothing disappears anyway. So what is wrong?
For the ones who knows the book. I get stuck in one more problem which is in lesson three (page 79) of the book. There I can read: "View the Over2 node and edit the Move2D1 node."
I should do that to be able to position a shadow. The thing is I can not find any description to edit the Move2D1 node to the Over 2 node. But without doing that I can either see the Over2 in the viewer (but without the onscreen controls) or I can see the Move2D1, but this is without the back and foreground. So what do I have to do to see the complete compositing including the onscreen controls in the viewer.

Thankful for any advice and tip.
Best Frank

regarding lesson three, refer to the image of the node tree on page 78 and that is the way your node tree should be constructed. load Over2 in the viewer by clicking on the left side of the Over2 node. edit the parameters of Move2D1 by clicking on the right side of the node. this allows you to edit the edit the move2d parameters while looking at the final composite the Over2 node provides. if you're stuck on what various parts of the nodes mean and do, page 234 of volume 1 of the shake manual goes over this thoroughly.

you're welcome and glad to help. i'm brand spanking new to shake myself. if you've not done the tutorials supplied by apple in the software box, i recommend them. i really like the nodal structure, i'm kinda wishing everything was node-based now.

I've not got the book in front of me, but from memory you create the shadow uses the robot footage. That then passes through a number of other nodes like brightness, move 2d etc (all explained in the book) and is added into the footage at the end of the script.

Occasionally I found mistakes in the instructions but if you read and re-read the instructions THEN check the images of his scripts later on in the lesson you can figure out what needs to be done.

It's all trial and error. I'm only learning and have completed most of the book once but I still need to go back and review a lesson as I'm not using Shake on a daily basis.

Don't get down hearted. The book is good and will really help you. I found that if I got stuck and frustrated with a lesson I started to get blinkered as to how to solve the problem. I just ended up going round and round in circles. If you find yourself doing the same just stop that lesson... go have a cup of tea then come back to it OR start another lesson.

Banging your head against a brick wall only hurts and frustrates. Take a break and it will all become clear.... probably at 3am like happens to me. My wife has got used to me jumping out of bed in the wee hours now!

Keep at it mate... you'll get there!

Dave

I have just a quick question. I know a 3 button mouse is nessecary but what is the alternative in the meantime. i.e. chapter 4 right mouse click for a pop up menu. My regular mouse is not providing this pop up menu. how else can I get it?

A two button mouse minimum really IS needed... For now, can you control click?

Thank you for your quick response. I can't get the pop up menu by control click. I am using a standard apple mouse. I thought it had a built in left click right click.

The right button equivalent on a single button Mac mouse is Control-click (i.e. holding down the control key while clicking with the mouse). In some apps (such as Avid) they require holding down another modifier (...I don't know why, ...I think in Avid it is shift-cntrl-click). Goodluck!

Still no love. I hit control click on the knot (also, shift click, command click, and option click) and I still don't get the menu. I guess I will just have to hurry up on getting the 3 button mouse, unless anyone has any more suggestions for the meantime. There must be some manuel way of getting that specific menu? (for those who have the book, it's chapter four regarding the apple drawing.)Maybe I some settings wrong that won't recognize the control click?
