iMac with i5 processor and 8 GB RAM = good enough?
by Niklas Wikman on Oct 27, 2009 at 1:33:46 pm

Our main Mac is a Mac Pro 8-core (2,8GHz with 14 GB of RAM, that works just fine with our IoHD. (We shoot in SD over DVCPro50 on a Panasonic AG-HPX500).

We ordered new Macs to the office - iMac with i5@2,66 GHz and 8 GB of RAM. Just out of curiosity - will FCP7 run on this iMac, and perhaps wit the IoHD (with correct drivers, of course)? IoHD on the iMac is just an option, main use will be "offline" editing on the desktop, for final adjustment in the edit suite on the Mac Pro above.

The reason for asking here is that Aja does not specify iMac at all as "approved". But then again, FCP7 should run on an iMac, right?

it is not approved because an iMac does not allow the user access to any type of external storage as the IoHD takes the entire FW buss to handle the video.

Since there is only one FW buss on your computer there is not a place to capture or playback the media from other than the System drive- and that is NOT recommended.

*doh*

Gary - I'm fully aware of this. It just slipped my mind...
Our MacPro has a PCIe card with FW800 connectors. (We use FW800 disks for video).

Then the IoHD on the iMac is no issue. Remains whether or not FCP7 will run. But I'm in the wrong forum for that question. ;)

[Niklas Wikman] "Then the IoHD on the iMac is no issue."

You might want to reread what Gary wrote. It is an issue.

IoHD on the iMac was just an option, as I wrote in my OP. As long FCP7 will work, I'm happy.

Shouldn't be a problem if you were to use GigE to access storage.
