With that said, I have played back Canon XL-H1 tapes on a Sony HVRM series VTR with success (no true RS422 VTR control). And with that said, Sony is about to release the HVR-1500 (about $6500) which is a "pro"
HDV VTR with HD-SDI out, and RS422 control.
There are others on this and the Kona forum that have had success with VTR control with firewire, while using the I/O and/or Kona to capture audio and video.
REmember, there is no embedded audio with the XL-H1 - analog audio only, unless you buy the AJA HD10AM audio embedder.
