Further to Paul's suggestion, if you're referring to effects like reverbs or echoes, a recommended way of working is to create a new bus, send the original track to it, then apply the desired effect to the bus. You can then control the level of the effect (from 0% to 100%) by automating the fader on the bus.
Depending on how you want the final mix to sound, though, you may find it necessary to split your clips up between separate tracks. For example, if you want one clip to have a reverb effect and be followed by clip with no reverb (but with the reverb from the first clip carrying on underneath), you will have to have them on separate tracks.
