 | tool for creating fade-in, fade-out in the timeline?
by Ben Ged Low on Feb 26, 2006 at 7:27:12 am |
I'm new to Soundtrack Pro. I've used Logic for years. Is there a tool in Soundtrack Pro that will allow me to do a quick fade-in or fade-out on the mixing timeline without having to click furiously in the envelopes, or without having to go into the audio editor and have to create separate files.
I would like to be able to do like in Logic, grab a tool, drag slide a fade-in or fade-out instantly without creating additional files, and without leaving the mixing timeline.

The answer is yes. Right click (or Control click) on the tool bar at the top of you window (the are with "New Project," "New Audio menu." etc. and this will bring up a sub menu. At the bottom of that subm menu is "Customize Toolbar..." Open that and you will see a series of addititional tools to add to the Toolbar, including Fade In, Fade Out, Crossfade and a number of icons for various Proccesses. Enjoy,
Sjon

Thank you most kindly Sjon, I did a one hour docu just before Christmas, before all the recent updates to ST Pro, and it was a nightmare ... stops, crashes, wicked deadline, I never had 5 minutes clear to even ask about those tools, which would have been so helpful.

Aha!
Now I remember why I didn't use the tools all through that nightmare of a mix...
The tools are VISIBLE on the toolbar, but they are greyed out and not useable! Why would this be?

Aha! Again.
Of course they are NOT greyed out when I've opened the particular file into an audio edit window to edit.
In LOGIC they have similar tools that apply straight to the general timeline, no need to pull a file into another window, nor to 'record' a new audio file. It does the change and the change is audible, but only 'recorded' into the final mix.
I was looking for a super fast way to put fades and cross-mixes into my overall mix, without having to open another window and create an additional file (which I then have to take care of).
So my question would be better rephrased - is there a way to use these tools in the general timeline, WITHOUT having to open the audio edit window?

In a word...no. What you (and many others of us) want is not possible. It's a rather odd limitation considering Pro Tools, Nuendo and most other DAWs have a quick way to apply fades at the top timeline. Ah sigh,
Digital 'Heaven' it would be Martin. I just mixed another flick. And having to bop into the audio file mode is a lot of extra steps, and files. I can't imagine why they did this. Seeing as how they were borrowing from the Logic platform.
But then again, I just bought the Sony HDV camera, and for a camera person it is really dumbly laid out, buttons seriously out of place for smooth shooting, and buttons missing where they were on the PD series, perfectly placed. It looks like the technicians made it without involving cinematographers.
Thank you for confirming it isn't possible. It's that gnawing feeling that it IS possible and I'm wasting all this time doing the workaround. Now I can relax and know that there is only ONE long way round.

It's possible, but not within the working timeline. You have to double click the audio file you want to do something to and then make and save your changes to it and then it will be translated on the timeline. Very inconvenient!!! I find it easier to just play with the volume automation in the envelopes.
