Upgrading drives on U320-R
by Kats Serraon on Apr 24, 2008 at 7:06:07 am

Hi,

Is it possible to upgrade the 250GB drives on my U320-R HMV to higher capacity drives like 500GB IDE drives now available in the market?

I am running on Quad Pro G5s with ATTO UL5D. Still on Tiger 10.4.10

Kats

Hello,

It is theoretically possible, but not necessarily recommended.
Ciprico does sell a unit that has those size drives and it would be supported.

Putting your own drives in the unit is not recommended by Ciprico due to possible compatibility issues and this would also not be supported. It should work, but there's no way to tell if there is a compatibility issue with a drive if Ciprico has not tested it.

The drives that were qualified and supported for that model are: Hitachi Deskstar, HDS725050KLAT80, p/n 0A31613.

Thanks for the reply.

IDE drives are on their way out. I was just thinking of buying off the shelf hard drives for this. I can go out and look for hitachi drives with the same specs to be safe. But I am also toying with idea that this is also a good time to up the ante to 2 terra by populating it with 500 GB drives. I am just not sure if the firmware can support it. But I guess thats the risk I have to take.

If you want to call Ciprico for pricing on the correct drives it is CP/n 81039774. Doing a Google search for Hitachi p/n 0A31613 shows the drives going for around $160 each. Good luck!
