Leopard and HUGE - Problems
by Christian Viel on Apr 19, 2008 at 10:24:28 pm

Ever since we installed Leopard on our Mac (PowerPC G5, Dual 2.3 GHz) - we have had problems with our HUGE unit - Media Vault U320-R running on an ATTO Express PCI UL4D card.

We have updated the firmware on the HUGE through a PC. According to the PC software, we have now the firmware 19d installed. We also flashed the Atto Card, and we have the February 2008 drivers according to the ATTO maintenance software - which also claims our card is fine. Yet...

Every time we fire up the unit, it beeps twice and keeps beeping sporadically every 5 to 10 minutes or so, usually two beeps, sometimes three or four. I also noticed that our terminator behind the drive keeps switching between red and green. If the drive remains on for too long, it eventually freezes and beeps steadily - all the lights in the front of the device lit in a steady green.

We tried the unit on a similar machine equipped with Tiger 10.4 and none of these issues pop up ie Terminator is a steady green light and no beeps or freezes occur whatsoever. The unit runs fine and smooth like it used to... We have checked all the cables and connections and everything appears to be fine, and is at least under OS 10.4. The ATTO card works fine under 10.4 as well.

If anyone could shed some light on a potential solution, it would be greatly appreciated.

Since the latest crash, now the HUGE won't even boot - the U320 never comes on, essentially rendering our $8000 HUGE into a very expensive door stop...

Support through web request at CIPRICO has gone unanswered.

Any body has any clue to help us revive our drive?

Christian,

There does appear to be a problem with the Ciprico web support, sorry for that. I have reviewed your original post and will try to replicate the problem in the lab. As well as speaking with Victor in California, we are looking into the problem up here in Minnesota. Please excuse us for the response delay as we have had some changes lately in our support team and location.

Kevin

Hi Kevin!

Yes, we sent two support request through the web form and have not got an answer, hence our posting here.

We spoke twice to Victor and to ATTO today. We think the ATTO card is out of the equation. Suspicions are on the SCSI cable, although we tested again with the cable on OSX Tiger 10.4 and the unit works fine... We will try with a new cable and a new terminator tomorrow to see if it is related.

Please keep me posted if you guys find anything. We want our HUGE back! ;-)

OK.

Got a brand new cable certified for U-320 at Atto's recommendation.

Borrowed a new terminator.

Problem remains the same. Unit works fine under 10.4. Fails under Leopard and now will not even mount anymore.

Hi Victor!

WE try numerous things at this point and as soon as I finish my next job, I'll wipe my OS off the MAC and reinstall and see where it leads...

Anybody has any other clues as to the behavior of the drive?
