Waiting for local disks...
by Butcher on Sep 12, 2005 at 10:07:25 am

Well, here we are again. Hopefully this is not such a major problem.

Just to refresh your memory, we had the recent problem trying to mount both our disks, a HMV900 and a new 320. After using Robert:s solution, we were able to mount both disks and spent most of the following two days transferring data that had been loaded onto borrowed disks back to the original storage.

We did not switch off the G5 until we had completed this process.

The nest time we switched on the G5, while booting up, it suddenly announced that it was "waiting for local disks", after which it would not go any further in the booting process..

This happens if we have any external drive on while booting up. It happens with the 320, the HMV 900 and a Maxtor 80 GB firewire drive that we tried out. Singly -- or all together

If you leave all the drives off, the G5 boots up without a blip and functions perfectly.

Now what? Please help quickly -- we are in the midst of a job!

Many thanks.

Sounds to me like you need to rebuild that G5 from the ground up... i.e. erase and install tiger, reload apps, drivers the whole shebang... try it, you'll like it...

But before you do, I really think you should run disk utities from your Tiger disk (use it as the startup disk) on all your drives. Make sure that it's not a disk problem that way. If you have DiskWarrior, run that on your startup disk first too. might also run the hardware test that came with your machine (another disk there) ... But your setup should run just perfectly. I'm running a UL320 HMV900 setup (ATTO UL3D) as well as a Fibre Channel array (also Huge's of course) with no less than 8 FW drives some 400 some 800 without a hitch here on 10.4.2, FCP 5.02, and QT 7.0.1... but was a totally clean install...

Thanks for the quick reply, Jerry.

Obviously you caught a whiff of the fix we are in...

I have no problem with re-building the set-up, if required. By the way, I am not running Tiger yet -- my OS is still 10.3.9. Is that a problem? I do not have Disk Warrior, but will beg, borrow or steal a copy tomorrow. Will give the tests a shot first and see what I get before we go in for complete open heart surgery. though from what you tell me, the latter may be inevitable.

Thank you for the advice.

Are you running FCP 5? If so run do not walk to Tiger 10.4.2, and QT 7.0.2. If you are still running FCP 4.5 I think the best setup for it is 10.3.8, QT 6.5.2...

P.S.

If you haven't done a fully clean install on that computer in say, over 6 months... IT"S TIME... At the school I teach at part time, we reload 100 FCP stations every semester. Makes a huge difference in operability/stabilty I'm quite convinced...

Your first mail convinced me, Jerry.

We are now in the process of emptying the internal HD on the G5 preparatory to running a full re-install.

I have also acquired Disk Warrior today and we plan to run it before doing anything else.

I have also ordered Tiger as well as FCP 5, both of which should come in tomorrow.

Hopefully, by this time tomorrow, we will have a new improved set-up.

Thanks a million.

I had a similar "waiting for local disks" problem, which we eventually solved by moving the two HMV600 units to a PC-based Avid, and getting a newer set of HMV 600 units for the mac. The only difference was that the new set had 8Mb caches on each drive, while the older ones had older generation drives with 2mb cache each.

In terms of "waiting for local disks" - our system used to come on line after 4 to 15 minutes of waiting.

Regards
Francois
