adding closed captions to authored DVD via SCC
by Bob Cole on Jun 5, 2008 at 2:12:09 pm

I have a nearly-authored Encore 2.0 DVD, and have just learned that it must carry Closed Captions.

The CC company says, send us a Windows Media file, and we'll send you an SCC file.

The Encore manual makes this look dead simple.

I would appreciate hearing from someone who can tell me what I am about to learn the hard way.

Should I put timecode on the Windows Media file?

Thanks.

Once I get the SCC file back from the closed captioners, how can I check the placement, tweak the placement, etc.?

Bob,
First, you should review the captions for spelling and grammar. Have your captioner provide a text file or you can make your own with the CCASDI program found at the link below.
Link each timeline in your project to the specific .scc file by clicking the VIDEO track in the timeline then selecting the file in the properties window.
The only way I know to make sure the captions are playing correctly is to burn a disc and play through a monitor that can decode CC.
I've found these tools to be quite handy for dealing with .scc files.

I hope this is helpful.
