Wide Angle Lens Shade - How to remove it?

Hey gang!

Has anyone removed the lens shade (or whatever you call it) from the Sony x0.8 wide angle lens? (P/N VCL-EX0877) I noticed there are some very small holes in what appears to be a retainer ring on the front of the lens.

Can it be removed? If so- what is the best method?

Yes, exactly! It interferes with the filters in the matte box, which isn't a huge deal because it can just be kept back, but there's some vignetting from the matte box in that position. I zoom in a bit to avoid this but it defeats the purpose of the wide lens.

Maybe I'll just pry it off or try to cut off the leading edge. Frankly I think it's a useless feature.
