Just wondering if anybody uses the SP mode when they need to record very long events?

It's easy enough to put in two 32GB SDHC cards for nearly 4 hours. I've gone to around 8 just rotating cards. I see no reason to go to SP mode and lose quality. I also like to shoot progressive so I'm usually shooting 1080p30.

I have had trouble spanning slots. Got the media needs restoring error.
Time to get new cards and adapters I guess.

If they're SDHC they might have aging issues. Even SxS only have so many uses in them as per Sony's description of SxS-1.
Get professional grade cards such as Sandisk Class 10. High end Professional Photographers also depend on SDHC so their are professional cards out there. There's always some danger in the "consumer" grade cards due to QC or longevity issues.

Yes. There is a new version of the MxR adapter. Maybe getting that and going to Sandisk Class 10 is the way to go. I have a three hr. record looming in my future and I don't feel like I trust my current setup to pull it off.

Bob - Why not rent a set of SxS cards for your event?

It can be useful when mixing/matching with 1st gen XDCAM HD or HDV camcorders, which acquire in the 1440 codecs.

In the old days I used to shoot in SP to match with my HDV shots from the other camera. Worked well. Last week I had to shoot half the event in SP to save memory (forgot some of my SDHC cards at home!) Meanwhile got some from nearby Microcenter and switched back to 1920x1080i. Made the timeline in 1920x1080 on which the 1440x1080 expands sideways to fill. Of course there is a compromise in quality, but with the EX cams it is passable in a crunch.
