Quick question: USB cable to camera versus Sony SBAC-US10 reader/writer

Hi
I have a shoot coming up with an EX1 or an EX3 (assuming both have the USB connection) where I will be offloading the media to a drive after shooting each day. I am trying to get an idea of how long I should plan on per 16GB card if I were to travel light and rely on the onboard USB versus the Sony SBAC-US10.

Anyone anyone?

That's a really good question, I'd like to know that too. My theory on taking the US10 with has been as a backup device as well as a card reader that can download footage while the camera is still in operation.

Hi There,

You will not find any speed variance between the SB10 and the camera USB. You should expect to spend about 15-20 minutes per 16GB card. If you have some money you can get one of these http://www.nextodi.com/en/product/NVS2500_en.html and back it up in 3 minutes. Of course for the same 2000 you could always get a Macbook Pro and back up via the express card slot as well as use the computer for other stuff.

I wish I was good at one thing rather than average at many, but oh well.

Thanks, very helpful info. Just updated the firmware on the PDW-U1 and tomorrow Im going to try copying to a ProDisc...

$500 is all my Toshiba Laptop cost and it also does more than back-up duty.
(Not to spark a PC vs. Mac discussion :)

I work with Mac and I consider to buy a lap-top PC for downloading on the field.
Whenever I pack my 17'MBP to bring it to the battlefield, I cry.
No need to be Einstein to see the pros.

Exactly right and now there's even PC laptops for less than $500!
Before the SD adapter card solution, another 8gb SxS was $500.
I'd make sure back-ups are in at least two places.

So, I was fortunate enough that a friend allowed me to use his EX-1 to test these transfers. I was able to get around 1 min/GB transfer rate while connected to the camera via USB cable. Once copied to a hard drive I then tested copying to the PDW-U1- that resulted in a 2 min/GB transfer time. For ease and redundancy I will be taking the Lacie 2Big Quadra 500 GB RAID1 drive.
