Can anyone confirm whether or not EX1 footage can be captured direct-to-computer through the USB2 output? I want to bypass the solid-state cards because of capacity limitations and record directly from camera into the computer as the live event is taking place. This would be using Final Cut Studio 2 either into a MacPro or MacBook Pro.

Hi Teresa,
The EX USB connection is only for transferring media to and from the SxS Pro cards and for firmware updates. If you want to capture to a computer or a deck you would need to use the firewire or SDI port. The firewire port on the EX supports the HDV modes only whereas the SDI port will output all modes and even do a standard def. down convert in real time.

Very soon two MxS cards with an SDHC 32GB card will mean you'll have close to 4 hours record time in camera. You need more than 4 hours straight record time?
Heck 2 more of those cards would give you enough for nearly 8 hours of continuous recording.

NO, USB sends packets of data and it is only used to transfer data. Firewire or SDI send streams of data. I couldn't imagine not having enough capacity using the cards. You would need two of them and as one is getting full you can switch to the second while you or someone else transfers the data to your MBP.I know these SXS card are expensive but here is a link to something you will find as an alternative.
