XDCam: external drive recommendations?
by Jordan Kerfeld on Jun 6, 2008 at 5:55:53 pm

Hello--

I'm a film student about to shoot his first HD short (16mm and Panasonic DVX in the past), and I'm doing it on the new Sony XDCamEX...

I'm shooting it in 720p

Any external hard-drive recommendations? I was wondering if I would need to beef up my system considerably also (quad mac pro, final cut studio 2, 2GB RAM). Are there any accessories I need for capturing footage? I've heard some things about wrappers but I have no clue what that means.

...I need to buy an external. Should I go with a normal firewire 800 5400rpm or get a mini-RAID? How much space do files take up (would a 320GB suffice?) I'm a student and don't want to break the bank either; my budget is 300-500.

thanks
jordan

I'd get a G-Tech G-RAID 2, Cal Digit or Dulce Systems. I'm starting to like SATA much more than FW800 but these days you can get both.
