Painting onto matte

Hi all, Having an issue with the paint tool.
I have imported a matte into the comp as well as the source footage. I put a set matte onto the footage. I need to paint a few edges in but when I go to paint onto the matte it just comes up with a single line rather than a full brush stroke. I tried to change the brush settings and no matter what I try it doesn't change.
