toxik / combustion
by samuel gressin on Aug 4, 2009 at 4:38:36 pm

Hi all,
Reding this :
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?id=5561949&siteID=123112

toxik is no longer a standalone software and become a part of maya 2010.
I wonder if it should be consider as a good news for combustion, as it let some marketing free space to live ?

Well then. Glad I didn't drop five grand on it. Discreet / Autodesk does it again!

Same here.

After all that, it's toxik that gets canned first...

I have a sneaking suspicion that Autodesk will bundle combustion with Max when 2011 arrives next spring.

I don't imagine it's going to survive as a separate product after stagnation in favour of Toxik over the past few years, so what do they do with combustion?

Unbelievable - I'm shocked, especially considering how many times we've been told that Combustion isn't getting any love because all of the developers have been put on Toxik. Sounds to me like they've been layed off.

I guess there's just no money in compositing software. Autodesk should know. After all, they're the experts on making money.

Questions:

Does this mean that the Systems products are all that's left of the once mighty Discreet?

Does Ken LaRue still have a job?

Oh ho ho!

I tried and tried to like Toxik. It's name befit my feeling.

Seems to me there's decent $$ in compositing software for a smaller and more efficient company: the Foundry or Eyeon. Autodesk is a massive company and their Discreet line probably accounts for a very small slice of their profits.

But they keep outputting updates for our Flame. A major update once a year with plenty of service packs in the meantime.

Amid all this news of Toxik and Shake both dropping by the wayside, one thing that I think people should consider is Motion. I'm not sure about the current dev team but originally, Motion was made by many of the original developers of Combustion. Version 1 & 2 were pretty disappointing but I got my update to Final Cut Studio 3 last week and I have to say that Motion actually does feel quite a bit like Combustion. The masking, particles, and non-cloning portions of the program feel just like combustion. In my short test, the tracker seems more accurate than the one in Combustion or Shake. Unfortunately, it's not really designed to work on more than one shot at a time and it still needs a few tools like Clone/Reveal and a decent color corrector but I'm pretty happy with Motion for low-impact stuff and I'll be going with Nuke for the more robust VFX stuff when the new version comes out.

[Alan Okey] "Does Ken LaRue still have a job?"

Very much so. He is demoing Toxik/Maya Compositor in partner booths at the show. AFAIK, the announcement hasn't changed his position at the company. So that should be some indication that there are plans for future improvements.

[greg gilpatrick] "Amid all this news of Toxik and Shake both dropping by the wayside, one thing that I think people should consider is Motion."

Toxik isn't being dropped by the wayside, or anything like that. I suggest you sit back and let the plans for Toxik/Maya Compositor play out.

I think it's highly strange that Toxik would bite the dust as a stand alone application first, and you have recently seen some Combustion tutorials on the Area.

With Red Giant talking about(at NAB)serious talks with AD about porting Trapcode and other products to the Discreet line, I personally would like to see AD take a modified version of Toxik, try to replicate most of the unique features currently in C*, and call it the new generation Combustion.

Trapcode's not a particular product, but only some of their plugins work in *c (Shine for one)

Anyway, I've bitten the bullet and gone with AE for the moment. I'm no longer freelancing so I can't really justify Nuke (and especially the support for Nuke) for my own use.

Anyway, I've bitten the bullet and gone with AE for the moment.

I've also been using AE CS4 for about a month.. At first, I was very excited about it.. I thought "This is everything c* has been missing!".. That is true for motion graphics, but I think c* still demolishes it when it comes to compositing.. No selection operator? No independant mask operator? I shutter to think about rotoscoping in AE..

I'll definitely keep using it for motion graphics, though..

Motion? I'm a PC user (and always will be), so no Motion for me.. Maybe when Windows7 comes out I'll take a look at it..

Now no Toxik, either.. :(

If Toxik is being handed over to the Maya camp, maybe some of the developers can go back and take a look at c* (if there are any left)..

I know that Trapcode is the name of the company that makes Particular, Shine, 3D Stroke, etc. But they were bought by Red Giant some time ago, if I remember correctly...so, I was referring to the interview with a Red Giant rep. regarding Trapcode plugins (particular especially, as they were demo'ing V2 at NAB) possibly being ported to the AD line (for the Flame now...since Toxik is history?)

Now Toxik had been removed offcialy from the product list on Autodesk site

http://usa.autodesk.com/industries/media-entertainment/television
http://usa.autodesk.com/industries/media-entertainment/film

Combustion still on Televsion page!

i really don't know what to say!
but i didn't stop laugh when i knew they stopped Toxik as standalone application..

In my openion Combustion made good name..they can invest its name into new update which makes new product they can do to be good compititor for Nuke,Df and AE..
better than creating new names for products which takes much time to be known..and at the end no one knows it!

for exapmle..
combustion forum here despite all the says that combustion dead!
But there is posts compared to the Toxik forum ..

Combustion still the best application on desktop has color correction tool..
but other tools some of new products in the market could jump combustion into it..
but i'm sure combustion can get it..once they made new update..

let's see what will happen next days!
who knows we might see newer version of combustion 2010.

TOXIK ISN'T DEAD! From what I understand the same team is still working on it. The software that was being demoed at Siggraph was labeled Autodesk Toxik 2010 on the Splash screen, though they had to refer to it as Maya Composite. AFAIK, Combustion is still comatose, and really don't see a chance of it being resurrected. There is a better chance of Toxik/Maya Composite getting tools similar to what we found and loved in Combustion.

Again, all I can say is sit back and see how it all plays out.

And you know what? There's an even better chance that I will never, ever buy or recommend another Autodesk product as long as I live.
